TRIGGER

Material
  • 2 pictures of family members

Steps
  • Begin by asking, “Have you ever compared yourself to someone and felt left out?”
  • Show two pictures of family members and ask the children what are the similarities.

Lesson
Share how Asaph, a singer in the temple, felt sad because others seemed to have better things even when they didn’t serve God (Psalm 73). But Asaph discovered that God’s love and truth are the most important.

CRAFT

Material
  • Cardboard tubes (toilet paper roll or paper towel roll cut to size)
  • Colored paper or construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue
  • Stickers, markers, and other decorative materials
(Optional) Aluminum foil or a small styrofoam ball

Steps
  • Wrap the cardboard tube with colored paper and secure it with tape or glue.
  • (Optional) Create the microphone top by scrunching aluminum foil into a ball or using a styrofoam ball wrapped in foil. Attach it to the top of the tube with tape or glue.
  • Let kids decorate the tube with stickers, markers, and jewels. Encourage them to write the phrase “God’s truth is my song” on their microphone.
  • Children can draw music notes, write thank-you messages to God for His love, or add other creative decorations to personalize their microphone.
  • Once decorated, the microphone is ready to be used in worship or pretend play.

GAME

Material
  • Building blocks

Steps
  • Play “Truth Tower”: Use building blocks to create tall towers.
  • Let kids stack blocks but, after every round, they must answer, “What is more important than being rich/popular/talented?” (Correct answer: having God’s love and truth.)
  • If they can answer, they can add a block. If not, skip a turn.

Objective
Connect this to Asaph’s realization that only God’s truth is solid.

CREATIVE SNACK

Material
  • Apples, sliced into rounds
  • Sunflower seed butter (a nut-free alternative to peanut butter)
  • Raisins or chocolate chips for topping

Steps
  1. Slice apples into round pieces.
  2. Let the children spread sunflower seed butter on each apple slice.
  3. Stack the apple rounds with sunflower seed butter between each layer.
  4. Top each stack with raisins or chocolate chips to represent moments when Asaph felt sad but remembered, “God is good to Israel!” (Psalm 73:1).

Application
Remind the children that life has ups and downs, but God’s love remains constant and strong.

OBJECT LESSON

Material
  • Three clear cups or small clear containers
  • Water
  • Iodine solution (from the medical section)
  • Household bleach (regular laundry bleach, not scented or concentrated)
  • Spoon or stirrer
  • Protective surface cover (optional, to avoid stains)

Steps
  1. Fill one clear cup about three-quarters full with plain water. This represents a pure heart.
  2. Add a few drops of iodine to the water (start with 3–5 drops) and stir gently. The water will turn dark or murky, symbolizing envy, sadness, or the way comparing ourselves to others clouds our hearts. Explain that this is how Asaph felt inside sometimes.
  3. In a separate cup, prepare a mixture of water with some bleach (about 1 part bleach to 4 parts water). This represents God’s cleaning power and love.
  4. Slowly pour the bleach mixture into the iodine water cup while stirring gently. The dark color will fade or clear up, showing how God’s love cleans our hearts and refocuses us on Him.

Lesson
Discuss how Asaph chose to worship God even when he was confused or jealous, and how God helped him have a new, clean heart. Emphasize that just like the water becomes clear again, God can cleanse our hearts and help us trust Him no matter what.

Safety Notes
  • Perform this demo in a well-ventilated area.
  • Avoid ingestion or contact with skin and eyes; wash hands afterward.
  • Keep materials away from children when not supervised.
  • Test the demonstration ahead of time for the best ratio balance and effects.
God, thank you for loving us even when we feel confused, jealous, or sad. Help us remember your truth and worship you, just like Asaph did. Fill our hearts with your joy and let us tell others how great you are. In Jesus' name, amen.
